Before the idea of her first book came to mind, Kandy Derden developed a love for writing in high school. She participated in a story writing contest for the school newspaper. She won second place, so decided to look into creative writing and journalism courses. Journalism quickly became her favorite subject in school and a passion for writing and reporting was born. The next year, she repeated the class and became one of the editors of the school paper where she got her start. Throughout college, the writing continued, mainly taking class notes or letters home. However, she did create and sell puppet plays for VBS and Sunday School. Upon graduation, Ms. Derden became an elementary school teacher, then a cake decorator, and eventually owned the town bakery with her husband for 12 years. Her love for cooking and baking continued and blended well with her writing skills by supplying a monthly column featuring recipes in the Extended Weekend Getaways Magazine. When she isn't helping her handicapped students, or playing the piano for her church, or writing another book, she also serves the Missouri Disaster Relief efforts as a head cook for massive feeding distribution. And thus, she has many more stories to share.
As a paraprofessional at High School in her hometown, Derden also currently serves as the things - to-do editor for Extended Weekend Getaways Magazine. Since the magazine features places to go, things to do, and people to see across the United States, Derden began researching places to go or things to do from a child’s perspective for her publisher to promote with the monthly magazine.
