This volume contains lab activities for the following topics: biochemistry, classification, ecology, evolution, genetics, human body systems, reproduction and development, scientific inquiry, and study of life. A total of forty lab activities exceeds the New York State lab hour requirement. Teachers use multiple activities to deliver instructional objectives and accommodate the varied learning styles of their students. Those learning activities, the instructional tools teachers need to do their jobs, can be found as supplemental materials from textbook publishers, shared by colleagues, and for purchase on the web. Many teachers also spend countless hours creating their own instructional tools.
Through a combination of those methods, over the course of decades, I have compiled, written, modified and organized this collection of science investigations. They span ten topics commonly taught in biology, living environment and general science classrooms. The topics (biochemistry, cellular energy, classification, ecology, evolution, genetics, human body systems, reproduction, scientific inquiry and study of life) are also appropriate for health or anatomy classrooms. Each of the topic chapters contains four lab activities. This represents more than a full school years’ worth of hours for courses with a laboratory component.
