Jon Gamble
2575 Yerrinbool, NSW, AustraliaI wrote a my first picture book when I was 5. My aunt kept it and produced it, much to my embarassment, on my 21st birthday. When I was 13, I wrote my first novella. My teacher read it out in English class, again to my embarassment. I was into vampires then, actually not just vampires, but all things magical and otherworldly. I used to walk out into the forest at dusk to watch the shadows appear, because I was sure one day I'd see something there. Not in a spooky way, just out of curiosity. I forgot all about writing when I went to Law School, then oddly, I found my way into publishing and editing - but only boring old law books. Then I went on a meditation retreat and learnt all about something called 'being', and not getting caught up in worrying thoughts. This lead me into natural healing, which I am still doing 3 decades later. But, I have been lucky enough to find the time and space to keep writing. The Field of Hum, my first book for a younger audience, was written in a solitary boathouse, overlooking WesternPort Bay, in Victoria, Australia. Every day I watched the sun meld into the watery horizon, creating living images across the sea. That's when I first noticed the magic I remembered as a child - something I had forgotten all about. Then a real surprise: the characters in The Field of Hum appeared out of the waning light, stood behind me and dictated the story. It's their story. Now it's your story too. It's a story for everyone no matter what age. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed scribing it! Write to me and tell me your favourite character!!
